SAIL BLOOD DONOR GROUP
In February 1978 the Stanford Artificial Intelligence Laboratory began its
fourth year as a formal Blood Donor Group with the American Red
Cross--Stanford University Blood Center. We gave over forty pints during
our first year; hopefully we will do at least as well this year.
The blood that is donated is put to immediate use at the Children's
Hospital at Stanford and, to a lesser extent, at the Stanford University
Hospital. The Blood Center currently provides all of the blood needs of
the Children's Hospital and roughly half of those of the Stanford
Hospital, while also distributing blood throughout Santa Clara and
neighboring counties. The Center's goal is to build up the donation
program within the Stanford community so that the entire requirements of
the Stanford Hospital can be met as well.
In October 1976 the American National Red Cross instituted a new policy
for blood replacement. The blood needs of ANY person in any amount will
be met by the Red Cross anywhere in the United States where the Red Cross
has a donation program (this includes approximately seventy percent of the
country). There is still an average charge of $29 per unit (approximately
one pint) for processing the blood. In those areas where only non-Red
Cross bloodbanks operate, you or your insurance company will have to pay
for the blood itself also, for an average total cost for blood and
processing of $55 per unit.
There are two blood drives each year. The next one is scheduled for 9-10
March 1978. The Blood Center hours are Monday through Thursday from 8:30
am to 5:45 pm, Friday from 8:30 am to 2:45 pm, and alternate Saturdays
from 9 am to noon. All I need to know is which day and half hour you plan
on going over to donate. The entire process usually takes forty-five
minutes to an hour.
It is also possible to give individually, if that is more convenient.
Just call ahead (493-1363) for an appointment. One can give as often as
every 56 days. Just be sure to let the Blood Center staff know that you
are donating as part of the SAIL Blood Donor Group, and also let me know
that you have donated on your own.
The Blood Center is located at 3330 Hillview Avenue, Palo Alto 94304,
which is across from the VA Hospital. The easiest way to get there from
SAIL is to take Page Mill Road to Foothill Expressway, right onto Foothill
approximately half a mile to Hillview Avenue, left onto Hillview about two
blocks, and left into the Blood Center parking lot.
If you are interested in becoming a blood donor, let me know. If there
are any questions regarding your eligibility to give blood or regarding
anything else about this program, please contact me. I have lots of
pamphlets to look at. Remember our motto: "The blood you give may be
your own". Also our alternate motto: "The blood you receive could be
your own".
